Brett’s whole deal is a bigger pill to swallow, but readers who go with it will find a pleasant story. Becca is a much better developed character than Brett (handsome yet doofy, he has the complexity of a golden retriever), and her chapters are the novel’s highlights. Debut author Light sprinkles in just enough charm and good-natured romance as the narrative bounces between Brett’s and Becca’s perspectives to keep readers engaged but not overwhelmed by twee sentiment. They embark upon a “fake relationship,” but, predictably, it gives way to a real one. The two have little in common other than being pestered by their friends and families about the lack of a special someone in their lives. Brainy Becca Hart’s faith in love was destroyed by her parents’ divorce. High school seniors do the fake dating thing.īrett Wells has always been focused on football.

Orwell defined nationalism not as “patriotism,” or the love of one’s country, but as “the habit of identifying oneself with a single nation or other unit, placing it beyond good and evil and recognizing no other duty than that of advancing its interests.” In 1945, George Orwell diagnosed the matter of ideological tribalism in his essay, “Notes on Nationalism.” His thoughts have proved incredibly prescient. This tribalism occurs within the intelligentsia as well as among the masses the only difference is that the tribalism of intellectuals is usually ideological rather than partisan. As Lee Drutman of the New York Times observes, “Rather than being one two-party nation, we are becoming two one-party nations.” It all amounts to an ugly form of tribalism in which individuals are driven to act primarily by loyalty to their party. Liberals and conservatives are getting their news from different channels, placing their trust in different institutions, and associating more and more with those who hold similar political beliefs. American politics is becoming increasingly polarized. Hume defends a sentimentalist account of morality, arguing that ethics is based on sentiment and the passions rather than reason, and famously declaring that "reason is, and ought only to be the slave to the passions". He introduces the famous problem of induction, arguing that inductive reasoning and our beliefs regarding cause and effect cannot be justified by reason instead, our faith in induction and causation is caused by mental habit and custom. Against the philosophical rationalists, Hume argues that the passions, rather than reason, cause human behaviour. Impressed by Isaac Newton's achievements in the physical sciences, Hume sought to introduce the same experimental method of reasoning into the study of human psychology, with the aim of discovering the "extent and force of human understanding". In the introduction Hume presents the idea of placing all science and philosophy on a novel foundation: namely, an empirical investigation into human nature. The Treatise is a classic statement of philosophical empiricism, scepticism, and naturalism. A Treatise of Human Nature: Being an Attempt to Introduce the Experimental Method of Reasoning into Moral Subjects (1739–40) is a book by Scottish philosopher David Hume, considered by many to be Hume's most important work and one of the most influential works in the history of philosophy. Though he sympathizes, Gregor is reluctant to help until he learns a surprising fact: his father, who disappeared unexpectedly over two years before, had actually fallen down into Regalia just like Gregor and Boots and been taken prisoner by the rats. The Regalian council believes Gregor to be this warrior, and tries to convince him to undertake the quest mentioned in the "Prophecy of Gray". It is then that he learns the real reason for the rats' hatred of Overlanders: a mysterious prophecy written by the human colony's founder Bartholomew of Sandwich hints that an Overland "warrior" will stop an attempt by the rats to take over the underground realm once and for all. At first, Gregor wants only to return home, but when he is attacked by two rats during an escape attempt and saved by the Underlanders, he inadvertently brings the conflict between the two groups to a head. They meet several "Underlanders", among them the Regalians' crown princess Luxa, her cousin Henry, and the bats who are "bonded" to them. The two fall miles below into the Underland: a subterranean world home to humans with near-translucent skin giant sentient bats, rodents, and insects and an escalating conflict between the human city of Regalia and the rats' King Gorger. When Gregor's baby sister Boots falls through an old air duct grate in the building's basement, he dives in after her. Eleven-year-old Gregor is left home alone in his family's New York City apartment to watch his sister and grandmother.
